Natural Sunscreen DIY
Let me preface this with the fact that I am far from a "DIY Queen". I came across this recipe and it looked too good to be true. A handful of "clean", skin-nourishing ingredients peaked my interest so I decided to give it a go. In the end, I actually had fun whipping up this natural sunscreen and it only took about 10 minutes from start to finish.
I was blown away by how simple it was and when I tested it out I was both amazed and proud. My husband was quite skeptical and said: "let me know if it works". Of course I told him it would (with a smirk on my face) and inside I was praying that it would as I made a triple batch and had used several drops of my prized Helichrysum Essential Oil in the process. He eventually caved in and decided to try it. I was hoping he would for I wanted to use him as my "tester". He has very light and delicate skin (he will kill me if he reads this, haha) so if it worked for him I knew it was golden. I happy to report that I did not burn the hubby and that we will be taking the 5 tins of natural sunscreen with us to Greece in a couple of weeks!
I purchased everything on Amazon (Prime lover here!) and used some of my favorite doTERRA "skin" oils.
1 TBS Organic Beeswax
4 TBS Shea Butter
4 TBS Coconut Oil, Organic, Cold-Pressed, Unrefined
2 TBS Non-Nano Zinc Oxide Powder* (for 20 SPF)
10 drops Lavender
4-6 drops Sandalwood Essential Oil
1-2 drops Helichrysum Essential Oil
On VERY low heat, or using a double boiler, melt beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil. Once melted, add non-nano zinc. Stir using a whisk until its incorporated. Turn heat off and allow to cool for a few minutes. Add essential oils. Pour into jars or tins and allow to cool. And voila'! Done!
Here is why I chose to use these essential oils:
Lavender: soothing and calming to the skin (and emotions!)
Sandalwood: nourishing skin oil
Helichrysum: regenerating and anti-aging skin oil
*1 TBS Non-Nano Zinc= 10 SPF Add more for a higher SPF. I added 3 TBS for a total of 30 SPF. The sunscreen was not at all chalky as most Zinc based sunscreens tend to be.
Why use non-nano zinc? It will not be absorbed and enter the blood stream. It is the safest and most effective sunblock ingredient. Chemical sunscreens will enter the blood stream and that is why DNA altering ingredients like oxybenzone has gotten such bad press recently.
What is zinc oxide? It is a powdered mineral that sits on top of the skin. It is effective against UVA, UVB and even UVC rays.
